Senge et al. (1994) believe theories are often considered part of the world of academics but not understood in the real world. He explains that the English word "theory" comes from the Greek root word theo-rós, meaning spectator. This derives from the same word as "theatre." Human beings invent theories for the same basic reasons they invent theatre - to bring out into a public space a play of ideas that might help us better understand our world.
